Wisconsin 4-H Positive Youth Development recently announced that a Watertown teen will be honored with a top state award for outstanding achievements and contributions to 4-H.
Michael Wilson, 18, Watertown, a 2026 graduate of Jefferson High School, is one of 10 outstanding 4-H youth who will be recognized this fall at the Wisconsin Top 10 Key Awards ceremony. The honor will be presented Nov. 7 at the Wisconsin 4-H Fall Forum in Stevens Point.
The Top 10 Key Award is the highest honor a Wisconsin 4-H member can receive.
Each recipient must first have been chosen by their county as a county level recipient.
Wisconsin’s 72 counties may each nominate a certain number of county Key Award winners, depending on their population. Then those honorees may go on to compete for recognition at the state level.
There are more than 26,000 4-H members in the state, and a handful of county Key Award honorees per county.
From this pool of accomplished candidates, top county honorees may go on to be considered for state-level recognition, with 10 individuals chosen each year as exemplifying the ideals of 4-H leadership, achievement and service at the state level.
The 2026 Top 10 Key Award winners for the State of Wisconsin include Grace Carter, Bridget Danke, Adelena Hartjes, Bryndalyn Kanabe, Gavin Knudson, Josie Mertens, Eric Schutte, Grant Sime, Danielle Tank and Michael Wilson.
Wilson is a 13-year member of the Farmington All-Stars and a longtime reporter for his 4-H club. He has been active in the performing arts, natural sciences, rocketry, photography, and communication projects, among many others.
Through 4-H, he has developed and taught classes in creative games and conlangs (constructed languages), participated in the Team America Rocketry Challenge, performed at a national youth leadership conference, and served as a member of the Wisconsin State 4-H Drama Company, through which he and the other members of Dco wrote, cast, costumed, blocked, staged, memorized and performed their own original play at the Overture Center in Madison, all in the course of a week.
The valedictorian of the Jefferson High School Class of 2026, Wilson is a freshman at Beloit College and intends to major in Greek, Latin and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, with minors in mathematics and the performing arts. From there, he intends to pursue an advanced degree at UW-Madison in linguistics with the goal of becoming a professor in that field.
The Key Awards and Top 10 are sponsored by Wisconsin Farm Bureau Foundation, which supports programs that encourage and cultivate agriculture education across the entire state of Wisconsin.
