2026 October Natural Sciences Activities, Adventures, and Environmental projects
All 4-H members and families are welcome to attend any or all
meetings, activities and events for learning and/or enjoyment.
Project meetings. Some will be specific topics others will have a broader scope that cover more than one project area. At the September 4-H Open House an overview of projects was available. The October Natural Science Activity is – Geology
– a specific project area of Natural Science.
October Activity: Saturday Oct 3, 10am to 5pm & Sunday Oct 4, 10am to 4pm at the Jefferson County Fair Park.
At the RRVGS Gem and Mineral Show you will be able to view many types of rocks of the world. Especially those in Wisconsin and how they changed.
The theme of the show is Wisconsin Rocks. Learn about Wisconsin’s state mineral, rock and fossil. Come visit with Pierre . Look through his microscope at Wisconsin rocks and do activities about Wisconsin rocks.
Try gold panning, or compare rough and polished rock specimens. See minerals, gems and crystals that play an important part in our lives. Check out fossils from all over the world. All the “rocks” are for viewing or purchase as specimens to start or add to your own collection.
View the special rock collections. Learn how to make one or exhibit one you have. Want to make this a project you would enjoy doing this year?

· Trees & Flowers – Fall is a great time to gather leaves and seeds for tree/plant ID. Take beautiful fall pictures to help show the life cycle of trees/plants. Make a poster about “Why do tree leaves turn colors in the fall?”
· Start a Nature Log on seasons, birds, or animals.
· Consider an environmental question or problem. Exp:What do you say about climate change?
· Enjoyment and/or management of the environment – hiking, camping, rock collecting, fishing, boating, bird watching, hunting, and more.
· Attend meetings and activities of your club, county NS meetings, county events or programs about your Natural Sci

2026 October Plant & Soils Sciences Projects
include these project areas –
Crops, Vegetables, Flowers, House Plants and Plant Crafts.
All 4-H members and families are welcome to attend any or all
meetings, activities and events for learning and/or enjoyment.
There are many project possibilities. Does your family grow crops or have a garden to grow vegetables and/or flowers? Helping them and having your own house plants, flowers, vegetables or crops are project possibilities. Learning about the practices of growing and caring for the wide variety of plants would be part of your Plant and Soils Project.
In October —– Plan a “Seeds Saving “Activity
How would you answer these questions …….
Have you saved seeds? Do you like to gather seeds? “Why save them?”
When can you “pick” flower seeds to save?
Things to consider……………..
To save seeds you need mature seeds and they need to be dry before storing.
What are “mature” seeds? How can you tell if a seed is mature?
What does “ripe” mean and how can you tell if a seed crop is “ripe” and ready to harvest?
How should seeds be stored?
There are steps to take to keep seeds viable for planting. Label seeds with name of plant, date and where they were growing. Plus any other details
such as size and color. Make sure they are dry before putting in a paper envelope. Place in a container to keep in a cool dry place.

How can I keep a large Plant over Winter Activity
Take a cutting and propagate. Start a small new plant from a piece of
the large older plant. This can be done with a variety of plants. Starting there roots may differ. Research propagation and the plant to learn what each cutting needs to restart.
